Chapter Thirteen
An hour later, Iâd finished interviewing the clerk whoâd been stabbed. A drug addict had come into the store and tried to do a grab-and-go from the beer cooler. The clerk had tackled him, but the man had pulled out a knife and stabbed him. Luckily for the clerk, heâd turned to the side and the knife had skidded off one of his ribs; otherwise, he could have been seriously injured or even killed. The suspect had dropped the knife and run off.
âWe got him!â Sergeant Will Toomey said, coming up behind me as I watched the ambulance leave for the hospital so the clerk could be stitched up. âMartel chased him down. That Martel doesnât talk much, but when he runs it looks like heâs flying. That meth head didnât stand a chance. Martelâs going to book him into jail for resisting.â
âPerfect. Weâll let the State Attorney decide on the rest of the charges tomorrow. If you all arenât too busy, Iâm going to let Sanderson take over and run with this one.â
âExcept for this and some domestic crap, weâre pretty quiet tonight. Itâll be good for her to get a taste of the paperwork involved in a real case,â Toomey said. He was a tough but fair supervisor who was always willing to help a hard-working deputy start moving up the ladder. Years ago heâd moved into CID for about a month before requesting to go back on the street. He didnât like riding a desk, but was always willing to let others give it a try.
As for Deputy Matti Sanderson, she was tough and good at her job, but you could see the gleam in her eye that said she wanted more. Sheâd caught this call so it was only fair that, if I was going to let a patrol officer take the lead, she should be the one.
âYou want to do all the paperwork on this one?â I asked her.
âWhat, like an investigator?â She seemed surprised.
âOf course, Lt. Johnson will have the final say, but I donât think heâll mind you doing all the heavy lifting.â
âAre the other deputies going to think Iâm brown-nosing?â I could tell she was excited about doing a deep dive on the case.
âNope, theyâre just going to think youâre another poor sod whoâs been conned into doing higher pay-grade work without the higher pay,â I joked.
âYouâre giving this to me âcause itâs idiot proof, right?â
âTrust me, there are plenty of idiots that could screw it up. But, admittedly, this is a training-wheels case. You got the perp. You got video. Heâs not going to be able to hire a real lawyer. The guyâs going down. But having said that, itâs a chance to show that you can put a solid packet of paperwork together for the State Attorney.â
âI wouldnât mind giving CID a chance someday.â
âWeâll see what you think the fifth time someone from the prosecutorâs office calls asking for the report you sent them the first time they asked for it.
